Who We Are

The Greater Yellowstone Coalition (GYC) was founded in 1983 on a simple premise: An ecosystem will remain healthy and wild only if it is kept whole.

Since that time, we have emerged as a nationally known advocate for the idea that ecosystem level sustainability and science should guide the management of the region’s public and private lands.

Perhaps the best measure of our leadership and influence is our base of more than 26,000 supporters worldwide. These constituents have come together to fulfill our mission of protecting the lands, waters and wildlife of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, now and for future generations.

This vast ecosystem includes twenty million acres of wild country that includes Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, parts of six national forests, three national wildlife refuges, and state and private lands in Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana. The area is one of the largest, nearly intact temperate ecosystems left on Earth (see map).

The Greater Yellowstone Coalition works to ensure that a thoughtful and holistic approach is taken to managing the national and wildlife resources in harmony with people and modern development. We work to shape a future where wildlife populations maintain their full diversity and vitality, where ecological processes function on public lands with minimal intervention, where exceptional recreational opportunities abound for visitors and residents alike, and where communities can enjoy a healthy and diversified economy.

We have been a pioneer in defining and promoting the concept of ecosystem management for more than 28 years. Our offices, strategically placed in Bozeman, Mont.; Jackson and Cody, Wyo.; and Idaho Falls, Idaho, allow us to engage in a wide variety of efforts locally, regionally, and nationally to ensure the area's forests, streams, wildlife and other features are protected for generations to come.

Find out what we are doing today to protect the lands, waters, and wildlife the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, and how you can help play a part in maintaining its future.
